Abhishek Banerjee Alleges BJP Workers Attacked His Kolkata Residence During Birthday Celebrations
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee has alleged that his residence in Kolkata was attacked by BJP workers following a late-night confrontation between supporters of the two parties during his birthday celebrations.
The incident reportedly took place around 2 am outside Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat, where a heated exchange of slogans and accusations escalated into a clash. The Diamond Harbour MP alleged that BJP supporters attacked his workers, throwing them to the ground and beating them with bricks and stones.
Banerjee also shared a video on social media purportedly showing individuals tearing down banners and posters bearing his name.
In a post on X, the TMC leader alleged that the attack followed two days of surveillance around his residence and office.
“After two days of continuous recce, this is how BJP hooligans attacked my house at 2 AM today,” he wrote, claiming that the incident occurred despite the presence of Kolkata Police.
He further alleged that this was the seventh attempt on his life in the past six months and accused the authorities and judiciary of failing to intervene.
Following the confrontation, Banerjee reportedly came out of his residence and engaged in a heated argument with police personnel and BJP supporters. He also alleged that TMC workers were assaulted and that some BJP supporters were carrying revolvers with an alleged premeditated intention to kill.
Describing the injuries sustained by his supporters, Banerjee told reporters that one of his colleagues, identified as Tapas, suffered a serious injury near his thumb and required medical treatment.
“One of our colleagues, Tapas, had the tissue near his thumb crushed; I sent him to the hospital for stitches, but the doctor said stitches wouldn’t suffice; he will require plastic surgery,” he said.
He added that another party worker suffered a fracture to the bone beneath his eye, alleging that stones and bricks were thrown during the confrontation in front of the police.
Banerjee also referred to an earlier alleged attempt on his life on June 19, following an incident in Sonarpur when he was returning from Delhi.
He claimed that individuals armed with guns had attempted to attack him and were caught by his supporters. Despite a complaint being filed, he alleged that the police failed to take action.
In another post on X, Banerjee criticised the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court, accusing them of remaining silent over the alleged attacks and lack of police intervention.
The TMC MP also reiterated his allegations of surveillance, claiming that unidentified individuals had been conducting reconnaissance of his office and residence for two consecutive days before the latest incident.
According to Banerjee, the individuals allegedly identified themselves as police personnel when questioned.
He demanded an immediate investigation, questioning why the state police would allegedly monitor the premises of an elected Member of Parliament and who had authorised such surveillance.
Banerjee said he was bringing the matter to the attention of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Kolkata Police, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and West Bengal Police.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh dismissed Banerjee’s allegations, questioning the circumstances surrounding the late-night confrontation.
“The first time we are seeing birthday celebration on a leader being celebrated on footpath! If anyone creates a nuisance at night, then protest is expected. Who has the time to kill Abhishek Banerjee?” Ghosh said.
He further accused the TMC MP of attempting to mislead the public through emotional statements.
The confrontation came amid heightened political tensions between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP in West Bengal, with competing allegations over political violence, surveillance and the conduct of law enforcement agencies.
