Ukraine’s Zelensky sacks army chief Syrskyi after protests, appoints Drapatyi as replacement

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday dismissed Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander-in-chief of the armed forces and appointed Mykhailo Drapatyi as his replacement, following days of nationwide protests demanding Syrskyi’s removal.

The move marks the second major policy reversal by Zelensky under public pressure after last year’s protests forced him to reverse changes that weakened Ukraine’s anti-corruption watchdogs.

Announcing the appointment on social media, Zelensky said Drapatyi’s priority would be to strengthen frontline operations and increase pressure on Russia to achieve peace. He added that the decision followed consultations with military commanders amid growing criticism of Syrskyi’s leadership.

Despite the dismissal, Zelensky praised Syrskyi for his role in defending Kyiv and leading operations in Kharkiv and Kursk, thanking him for his service during Ukraine’s war against Russia.

Drapatyi pledged to serve with “absolute responsibility,” saying he would focus on strengthening the military while respecting the soldiers defending Ukraine.

Zelensky has tasked the new army chief with presenting an updated defence strategy, including military reforms, faster weapons and drone deliveries, stronger air defences and a clearer mobilisation plan.

The protests were sparked after Zelensky removed former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who had openly accused Syrskyi of blocking military reforms and maintaining a Soviet-style command culture. Demonstrators viewed Fedorov as a key reformer and demanded both his reinstatement and Syrskyi’s dismissal.

Syrskyi had faced mounting criticism from soldiers, veterans and military analysts over heavy battlefield casualties and his leadership style. His reputation suffered further after reports alleged abuse and high losses within a military unit closely linked to his command, intensifying calls for change within Ukraine’s armed forces.
