Sattu Vs Whey Protein: Which Is Better For Increasing Protein Intake?
Sattu and whey protein are both widely used by people looking to increase their protein intake, but the two differ significantly in their nutritional composition. While sattu provides protein along with carbohydrates, fibre and iron, whey protein contains a much higher concentration of protein.
In an Instagram post on September 17, dietitian and nutritionist Sonia Narang shared an approximate nutritional comparison of sattu and whey protein. She noted that nutritional values can vary depending on the brand, ingredients, preparation method, additives and serving size.
Sattu Vs Whey: Which Contains More Protein?
According to Narang’s comparison, sattu contains approximately 400 calories, 20 grams of protein, 60 grams of carbohydrates, 10 grams of fibre and 7 milligrams of iron.
Whey protein, meanwhile, contains around 370 calories, 70 grams of protein, 12 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fibre and 1 milligram of iron.
The comparison highlights the key difference between the two. Sattu offers a combination of protein, carbohydrates and fibre, while whey provides a considerably higher amount of protein in a more concentrated form.
What Are The Benefits Of Sattu?
Sattu is generally made from roasted gram and is a traditional whole-food option that provides protein along with carbohydrates and fibre. It can be incorporated into regular meals and may be useful for people looking for a more natural source of nutrition.
However, compared with whey protein, sattu contains substantially less protein and more carbohydrates. This makes it less suitable when the primary objective is to maximise protein intake without significantly increasing carbohydrate consumption.
Why Is Whey Protein Higher In Protein?
Whey protein is derived from milk and is processed into a concentrated protein supplement. Because of its high protein content, it can be a convenient option for people who have higher protein requirements or struggle to meet their daily protein needs through food alone.
“This is why whey is a better choice for protein,” Narang said in her post.
Sattu Or Whey Protein: Which Should You Choose?
The better option depends on an individual’s nutritional goals and overall diet.
Sattu can provide protein alongside carbohydrates, fibre and iron, making it a nutritious food that can form part of a balanced diet. Whey protein, on the other hand, is primarily useful when the goal is to increase protein intake efficiently and conveniently.
Narang’s comparison also highlights that sattu and whey serve different nutritional purposes. Sattu functions more like a whole-food component of a meal, whereas whey is primarily a concentrated protein source.
Therefore, the choice should depend on factors such as daily protein requirements, dietary preferences, overall eating patterns and individual nutritional goals.
