US Midterm Elections 2026: Voters Head to Polls as Control of Congress Hangs in the Balance
Americans are heading to the polls for the high-stakes 2026 midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress for the remainder of President Donald Trump’s term and shape the political landscape ahead of 2027. More than 57 million voters had already cast their ballots early, while closely contested House and Senate races are expected to play a decisive role in determining the outcome.
Polling stations opened across the United States on Tuesday as millions of Americans began voting in an election widely seen as a referendum on Trump’s first two years back in the White House.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are being contested. Voters in 36 states are also choosing governors.
Republicans currently hold majorities in both chambers of Congress, while Democrats are seeking to win enough seats to constrain Trump’s legislative agenda during the final two years of his presidency.
More than 57 million Americans had voted early by Monday afternoon, according to the University of Florida Election Lab, as reported by ABC News. The figure was approaching the nearly 58 million early votes recorded during the 2022 midterm elections.
Democrats aim to regain control of the House
Pre-election assessments have pointed towards a possible Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives, while the battle for control of the Senate remains highly competitive, Reuters reported.
Democrats need to gain at least three seats in the House and four in the Senate to secure majorities in both chambers.
Winning control of either chamber would give Democrats greater influence over federal legislation, government spending and presidential appointments. It could also open the door to congressional investigations into the Trump administration and create additional obstacles to implementing the president’s policies.
The Senate contest is expected to depend on several closely fought races, including those in Michigan, Maine, Ohio, Texas, Kansas and Alaska.
In Michigan, Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed is facing Republican Mike Rogers. The contest has drawn additional attention after Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens, whom El-Sayed defeated in the primary, endorsed Rogers.
Trump’s policies face voter scrutiny
The elections are taking place amid growing voter concerns over the cost of living, economic conditions and several major policy decisions by the Trump administration, including tariffs and the war with Iran.
These issues have put Republicans under political pressure despite Trump’s campaign rallies and efforts to mobilise his supporters, according to Reuters.
Trump has urged Americans to view the midterm elections as a verdict on his presidency. Republicans, meanwhile, are fighting to retain their congressional majorities and prevent a shift in power that could result in legislative gridlock.
The results could have significant implications for the administration’s ability to implement its domestic and foreign policy priorities.
California ballot dispute adds to election tensions
Election-related tensions also intensified after the US Supreme Court on Monday rejected the Trump administration’s request to prevent California from counting more than 20,000 disputed mail-in ballots.
The decision followed an earlier federal court order directing the administration to stop requiring election officials to set aside the ballots.
The dispute has added another legal and political dimension to an already closely watched election.
Severe weather threatens voting access in parts of the US
Heavy rainfall and flash flooding across parts of the Southwest could disrupt access to polling stations in sections of Colorado, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico.
Election administrators in the Navajo Nation announced changes to some polling locations, while voters in rural San Juan County, Utah, were permitted to vote electronically because some residents could face difficulties reaching polling stations, ABC News reported.
Election officials and voting-rights advocates have also encouraged people submitting absentee ballots close to the deadline to use official drop boxes or deliver their ballots in person.
The advice comes amid concerns that postal delays could affect postmarks and determine whether some ballots qualify for counting.
When will election results be announced?
The first results are expected after polling stations begin closing on Tuesday evening in parts of Indiana and Kentucky.
Vote counting will continue throughout the night, although the final outcome in closely contested races could take several days to establish. States with large numbers of mail-in ballots or ranked-choice voting may take longer to complete their counts.
The election results will determine whether Trump enters the final two years of his presidency with Republicans retaining control of both chambers of Congress or faces a Democratic-controlled legislature capable of blocking parts of his agenda and increasing scrutiny of his administration.
With control of Congress at stake, the 2026 midterm elections could prove pivotal in shaping the direction of US politics and governance through 2027 and beyond.
