Trump Calls $50 Million Contract Secured by Former Lawyer Alina Habba Mildon ‘Outrageous’
US President Donald Trump said Saturday that it was “unacceptable” for his former lawyer, Alina Habba Mildon, to secure a $50 million contract for herself while serving at the US Department of Justice.
“I thought it was totally obnoxious and outrageous, and it’s not acceptable,” Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida. “Not acceptable at all.”
The New York Times reported last week that the family of Venezuelan banker Julio Herrera Velutini had guaranteed Habba Mildon more than $50 million over four years. The agreement reportedly included an annual payment of $10 million, along with additional bonuses.
Herrera had faced US felony bribery charges before reaching a plea deal in August 2025.
Trump said he had told Habba Mildon that he did not want her to receive the money, describing the arrangement as “terrible.”
According to the newspaper, Habba Mildon was serving as acting US attorney for New Jersey when she signed the contract with Concord Partners, a company established by Herrera’s family, just days after its registration in late October 2025.
By the time she began working for the Herrera family, a court had already disqualified her from serving as US attorney. She resigned on December 8 and was appointed a senior adviser to the attorney general on the same day.
The New York Times reported that she remained in that position when she began working for Concord Partners on January 1.
The Justice Department’s website shows that Trump pardoned Herrera on January 15, 2026.
Habba Mildon denied any connection between her employment arrangements and the pardon. Last week, she said she had never been paid for a pardon, had not met anyone at the White House or Justice Department to discuss one, and had done no work to secure a pardon for anyone.
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
