Sanju Samson Smashes 41-Ball 82 In Ranchi To End Lean Patch With Explosive Knock
Sanju Samson rediscovered his explosive touch in the second T20 International against West Indies in Ranchi, smashing a brilliant 82 off 41 balls to end his recent run of low scores. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter delivered an aggressive performance on Friday, October 9, providing the foundation for India’s imposing total of 249/5 in 20 overs.
Samson’s innings came at a crucial time, with questions being raised about his recent form and competition for places in India’s T20I squad. His return to form was marked by powerful strokeplay, fearless intent and a rapid half-century.
However, despite India’s batting fireworks, West Indies went on to win the match by six wickets, levelling the five-match series 1-1.
Sanju Samson Ends Lean Run With Explosive Knock
Samson entered the contest after managing scores of 9, 7, 2 and 11 in his previous four innings. The poor returns had increased scrutiny of his form, particularly with young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi waiting for an opportunity.
The right-hander responded emphatically in Ranchi, scoring 82 runs from just 41 deliveries at a strike rate of 200. His innings included nine fours and four sixes, helping India maintain an aggressive scoring rate throughout the innings.
Although Samson received an early reprieve after being dropped, he quickly capitalised on the opportunity. A no-ball from West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein gave him a free hit, which he dispatched for a six.
Samson reached his half-century in just 21 balls, matching Virat Kohli’s record for the fastest T20I fifty by an Indian batter against West Indies.
97-Run Partnership With Ishan Kishan Powers India
Samson combined effectively with Ishan Kishan after India lost Abhishek Sharma, who scored 20. The pair added 97 runs for the second wicket, ensuring that the early dismissal did not slow India’s scoring momentum.
Kishan contributed 43 runs, supporting Samson’s aggressive approach as the hosts continued to attack the West Indies bowling attack.
India carried the momentum into the middle overs and finished with 249/5, recording their highest-ever T20I total against West Indies. Shreyas Iyer scored 40 off 18 balls, while Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on 44 off 18 deliveries.
Samson Explains His Attacking Batting Approach
Samson has maintained that the demands of T20 cricket require batters to keep attacking rather than become overly cautious after a few low scores.
After the first innings, he reiterated that his priority was to give India a strong start and take responsibility for his performances.
His approach in Ranchi reflected that philosophy. Rather than spending time rebuilding his confidence, Samson looked to score whenever the bowlers offered opportunities.
He also explained that he prefers to watch the ball closely, maintain a positive mindset and trust his instincts instead of deciding his shots in advance. <Cite refs={[“turn191383search0″,”turn191383search9”]}/>
West Indies Spoil Samson’s Comeback With Historic Chase
Despite Samson’s impressive knock and India’s formidable total, the visitors produced a remarkable batting performance to complete the chase.
West Indies captain Shai Hope led the response with 102 runs, while Sherfane Rutherford struck 84. Their partnership helped the visitors recover after losing three wickets for 58 runs.
West Indies reached the target with six wickets to spare, levelling the five-match T20I series 1-1. While India could not defend their total, Samson’s innings provided a timely boost to his confidence and reinforced his ability to deliver at the top of the order.
Samson will now look to carry the momentum from his Ranchi performance into the remaining matches as India seek to regain the advantage in the series.
