India’s mixed disability cricket team recreates Ganguly’s iconic Lord’s celebration after England win
India’s mixed disability cricket team recreated one of Indian cricket’s most iconic celebrations after defeating England by 118 runs at Lord’s, with players and support staff taking to the famous Pavilion balcony in a tribute to Sourav Ganguly’s unforgettable 2002 celebration.
India posted 206 for four before bowling England out for just 88 in the seventh and final T20I of the seven-match mixed disability series on Wednesday.
England had already clinched the series 4-3 after taking an unassailable 4-2 lead in the sixth match at Arundel. However, India ended the tour on a high with a commanding victory at one of cricket’s most iconic venues.
After the match, members of the Indian contingent gathered on the Lord’s balcony, waving blazers and shirts in celebration. The scenes immediately evoked memories of Ganguly taking off his India jersey and waving it above his head from the same balcony after India’s dramatic victory over England in the 2002 NatWest Trophy final.
The Differently Abled Cricket Council of India shared a video of the celebration on social media with the caption: “When India wins at Lord’s, the celebrations hit different.”
India seal emphatic win at Lord’s
Arjun Gawre set up India’s imposing total with a 68 off 44 balls before captain Majid Magray produced a stunning late assault.
Magray remained unbeaten on 63 from just 19 deliveries as India reached 206 for four, their highest total of the seven-match series.
England’s chase failed to get going. Hilal Ahmad Wani claimed four wickets for 21 runs, while Jayesh Parmar took three for 14 as the hosts were bowled out for 88.
The 118-run victory marked a significant improvement for India against England in mixed disability cricket. England had won the first seven-match international series between the teams 6-1 in 2025 and followed that with a 4-1 victory during their five-match tour of India earlier this year.
India’s latest 4-3 result therefore represented a considerable reduction in the gap.
Lord’s becomes special venue for India
The victory was also significant because Lord’s has become a memorable venue for India’s mixed disability side.
During their 2025 tour, India recorded their only win of the series at Lord’s, beating England by two wickets in the first international disability cricket match played at the venue.
Wednesday’s game was part of the MCC Festival of Disability Cricket, an initiative designed to increase the profile and visibility of disability cricket.
The post-match celebrations, however, gave the victory an added connection to Indian cricket history.
Twenty-four years ago, Ganguly famously waved his shirt from the Lord’s balcony after India chased down 326 to beat England by two wickets in the NatWest final, with Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif playing pivotal roles.
This time, another Indian team stood on the same balcony after defeating England — recreating one of the most recognisable celebrations in Indian cricket.
