Vijaypat Singhania, Padma Bhushan awardee and former chairman of the Raymond Group, passed away in Mumbai on Saturday evening at the age of 87.

His son, Gautam Singhania, confirmed the news, while a company spokesperson said the veteran industrialist and former Sheriff of Bombay died peacefully. His last rites are scheduled to be held in Mumbai, with the cremation at Chandanwadi crematorium.

In a condolence message, the Singhania family described him as a visionary leader, philanthropist, and inspiring personality whose legacy would continue to guide future generations.

Born into the Singhania business family, Vijaypat Singhania transformed the Raymond Group into a globally recognised brand in suiting fabrics and menswear, leading its expansion in manufacturing, retail and exports during his tenure.

Beyond business, he was known for his passion for aviation. A trained pilot and honorary Air Commodore, he set several records in ballooning, including achieving one of the highest altitudes in a hot air balloon.

He served as chairman of Raymond Group for nearly two decades before stepping down in 2000, handing over leadership—and later his stake—to his son Gautam Singhania.

In recognition of his contributions to industry and public life, he was conferred the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour.
