Brazil’s Lula, Flavio Bolsonaro Conclude Campaigns Ahead Of First-Round Vote
Speaking from a campaign vehicle, Lula described Sunday’s election as a choice between “democracy and barbarism.”
Workers’ Party president Edinho Silva said the turnout reflected growing momentum behind the leftist leader’s campaign.
“Unlike other Latin American countries, where we saw a right-wing wave at the end, here in Brazil we’re seeing a wave in our favor,” Silva said.
Right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro urged supporters to turn out and vote, predicting that his side could secure victory in the first round.
“I am convinced that everything is in place for us to win this election in the first round,” he said.
Flavio was photographed holding a placard featuring his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest after being convicted of attempting to overturn the 2022 election result, which he lost to Lula.
If no candidate secures more than 50 percent of valid votes — excluding blank and null ballots — in Sunday’s first-round election, the top two candidates will advance to a runoff scheduled for October 25.
