Abhishek Sharma Reclaims No. 1 Spot in ICC T20I Rankings After Record-Breaking Century Against New Zealand
India opener Abhishek Sharma has reclaimed the top spot in the ICC T20I batting rankings following a sensational century against New Zealand in the third T20 International. His explosive knock helped India chase down a target of 199 with ease, securing a six-wicket victory and sealing the series.
Abhishek reached his hundred in just 35 balls, narrowly missing his own record for the fastest T20I century in a match between Full Member nations. The left-handed batter also surpassed former India captain Virat Kohli to become the Indian with the most centuries in T20 cricket overall.
The International Cricket Council (ICC), in its latest rankings update, confirmed Abhishek’s return to the summit of the T20I batting chart following his match-winning performance in Wellington on Tuesday.
“Abhishek’s rise back to the top was arguably more expected, with the India left-hander reclaiming his spot at the top for T20I batters following his quickfire century against New Zealand in Wellington in the third game of their series on Tuesday,” the ICC stated on its website.
Abhishek Sharma Replaces Ishan Kishan at the Top
Abhishek’s return to No. 1 has pushed Ishan Kishan down to third place, while Pakistan batter Sahibzada Farhan has moved up to second in the latest ICC T20I batting rankings.
Kishan, who had taken the top position from Abhishek in July following his performances at the 2026 T20 World Cup, is yet to bat in the ongoing series against New Zealand. He sustained an injury while fielding during the opening T20I.
Abhishek had held the top position for approximately a year before Kishan overtook him. His latest rise marks another milestone in a career that has established him as one of India’s most explosive batters in the shortest international format.
He is the fourth Indian batter to reach the top of the ICC men’s T20I batting rankings, joining Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Kishan.
35-Ball Century Powers India’s Record-Breaking Chase
Abhishek produced a breathtaking display of power-hitting as India chased New Zealand’s target of 199 runs.
He smashed his century in just 35 deliveries before eventually being dismissed for 113 off 38 balls. His innings featured relentless attacking strokes that left the New Zealand bowling attack struggling to contain India’s scoring rate.
Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi provided equally aggressive support at the other end. The opening pair amassed 118 runs during the powerplay, setting a new benchmark among Full Member nations in men’s T20 internationals.
India’s opening over alone yielded 26 runs, adding to the record-breaking nature of the start.
The rapid scoring ensured that the required run rate was never a serious concern for India. By the time Abhishek departed, the hosts had effectively lost control of the contest, with India firmly on course for victory.
India eventually completed the chase with a six-wicket win, taking an unassailable lead in the series.
Abhishek Surpasses Virat Kohli’s T20 Century Record
The century against New Zealand was Abhishek’s 11th in all forms of T20 cricket, taking him past Kohli’s tally of 10 hundreds in the format.
Only West Indies legend Chris Gayle, with 22 T20 centuries, and Pakistan’s Babar Azam, with 13, have registered more hundreds in all T20 cricket than Abhishek.
The achievement underlines the opener’s remarkable scoring ability and his growing influence in the shortest format.
While Kohli remains one of India’s most accomplished T20 batters, Abhishek’s latest milestone reflects the changing dynamics of the country’s batting approach, particularly in T20 internationals, where aggressive starts have become increasingly important.
India’s T20 Campaign Gets a Major Boost
Abhishek’s return to the top of the ICC rankings comes at a significant time for India, with the team continuing to build momentum in the T20 format.
His ability to score quickly while maintaining a high level of consistency has made him a crucial part of India’s batting plans. The century against New Zealand also demonstrated his capacity to turn a challenging chase into a one-sided contest.
With Sahibzada Farhan climbing to second and Ishan Kishan slipping to third, the latest rankings update reflects the intense competition among the world’s leading T20 batters.
For Abhishek, however, the return to No. 1 is accompanied by a more significant personal milestone: surpassing Kohli’s Indian record for T20 centuries.
His record-breaking performance in Wellington has reinforced his position among the leading batters in international T20 cricket and provided India with another emphatic victory in their series against New Zealand.
