‘One More Piece Of Evidence’: PM Modi Hails BRICS New Delhi Declaration, Highlights Global Credibility

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted the adoption of the BRICS New Delhi Declaration as evidence of the grouping’s growing relevance and credibility on the global stage. The declaration was unanimously adopted by BRICS leaders during the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12.

The 140-point declaration covers issues ranging from global governance and economic cooperation to international security, sustainable development and the concerns of the Global South. It also calls for reforms of the United Nations and greater representation for developing countries in global decision-making institutions.

Modi Highlights BRICS’ Growing Global Role

The declaration comes as BRICS seeks to strengthen cooperation among its expanded membership and increase its role in global governance. The official document says the bloc’s expansion reflects its “influence, credibility, and appeal” as a platform for inclusive global governance.

During the summit, Modi also argued for a greater role for the Global South in shaping international rules and institutions. He said global governance should reflect current realities, including through greater representation in institutions such as the UN Security Council.

The Prime Minister has described BRICS as a platform for cooperation rather than confrontation, stressing the importance of dialogue, consultation and consensus among member countries.

New Delhi Declaration Adopted Unanimously

The declaration was adopted by all BRICS members at the New Delhi summit. It reaffirmed the grouping’s commitment to political and security cooperation, economic and financial collaboration, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

The document also supports efforts to make the international system more representative, effective and accountable, while calling for greater participation of developing countries in global institutions.

BRICS leaders further expressed concern over unilateral economic measures, including tariffs and sanctions, and their potential impact on international trade and development.

Focus On Global South

A major theme of India’s 2026 BRICS chairship was strengthening the voice of emerging markets and developing countries.

Modi said the Global South is often at the forefront of global crises but remains underrepresented in international decision-making. He called for a shift from a system where developing nations are primarily rule-takers to one where they can play a greater role in shaping global rules.

The New Delhi Declaration similarly calls for a more representative and equitable multilateral system and backs reforms aimed at increasing developing-country representation in institutions such as the UN Security Council.

India’s BRICS Chairship

India’s 2026 BRICS chairship included more than 400 meetings and engagements involving ministers, parliamentarians, officials, experts, businesses and other stakeholders across 30 Indian cities, according to the declaration.

The declaration commended India’s chairship and welcomed its efforts to strengthen cooperation around resilience, innovation, sustainable development and inclusive growth.

The summit concluded with China taking over the BRICS chairship for 2027. The New Delhi Declaration said members would continue working toward strengthening the grouping’s institutional development and long-term cooperation.

For India, the unanimous adoption of the declaration provides a key diplomatic outcome of its 2026 BRICS presidency, while the document places greater emphasis on the role of the Global South in shaping the international order.
