Hardik Pandya Left Out Of India’s ODI Squad For West Indies Series; Selectors Set Clear Fitness Benchmark

India have announced a new-look ODI squad for the upcoming home series against the West Indies, with Punjab all-rounder Naman Dhir and Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi receiving their maiden call-ups in the format. Veteran all-rounder Hardik Pandya, however, has been left out as he continues to work his way back to full fitness.

Hardik has been sidelined since the conclusion of the IPL 2026 season after a series of injury concerns during the summer ruled him out of both white-ball formats. He has been included in India A’s upcoming series against Australia A in Puducherry, beginning October 6, three days after the West Indies ODI series concludes.

Hardik Yet To Prove Full Fitness

Hardik is scheduled to undergo a fitness assessment at the Centre of Excellence (COE) by September 20 as part of his Return To Play process. The test comes around a week before the start of India’s home ODI series against the West Indies.

According to a PTI report, a section of the BCCI was keen on including Hardik in the squad, subject to his fitness clearance. However, the selectors have reportedly decided against taking that route after previous instances of players being named in squads despite fitness concerns.

Similar situations occurred during India’s Test tour of Sri Lanka and the subsequent home series against Afghanistan, when some players failed to secure fitness clearance in time, resulting in late changes to the squads and criticism of the selection process.

Selectors Set 10-Over Bowling Requirement

The selectors have reportedly drawn a clear line regarding Hardik’s return to ODI cricket. According to the PTI report, the all-rounder will not be considered until he is capable of bowling his full quota of 10 overs.

The benchmark effectively rules out selecting Hardik merely on the basis of his ability to bowl a limited number of overs. His workload and fitness will need to demonstrate that he can perform the complete role expected from a seam-bowling all-rounder in the 50-over format.

If Hardik proves his fitness and form during the India A series against Australia A, he could come back into contention for India’s tour of New Zealand in November.

Nitish Kumar Reddy Picked For West Indies ODIs

Meanwhile, the selectors have withdrawn Nitish Kumar Reddy from India’s Asian Games squad and included him in the ODI squad for the West Indies series.

The decision is reportedly linked to India’s need for a seam-bowling all-rounder in the ODI line-up. The selectors are understood to have considered Reddy’s role more important to the ODI setup than his participation in the T20 competition at the Asian Games.

With Hardik unavailable, Reddy could provide India with an additional seam-bowling option while also strengthening the lower middle order.

The West Indies series will therefore offer the selectors an opportunity to assess alternative all-round options while Hardik continues his rehabilitation and works towards a full return to international cricket.
