A compromised gut can trigger a range of health issues, which is why maintaining gut health is essential. Experts often recommend eating probiotic and prebiotic foods, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, and consuming fibre-rich foods.

However, if you still feel off, it could indicate underlying gut problems. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, MD, MPH, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist trained at AIIMS, Stanford, and Harvard, shared 5 early signs of an unhealthy gut in an Instagram post on October 12.

1. Frequent bloating and gas

Feeling gassy or bloated after meals may indicate an imbalance in gut bacteria.

2. Irregular bowel movements

Chronic constipation or diarrhoea can be your gut’s way of signalling trouble.

3. Unexplained fatigue

Poor gut health can affect nutrient absorption, leaving you tired even after adequate rest.

4. Food intolerances

Discomfort after eating certain foods may suggest your gut microbiome is struggling to process them properly.

5. Weakened immunity

Since 70% of your immune system resides in your gut, frequent colds or infections can signal that your gut health needs attention.

Paying attention to these early signs and taking steps to support gut health can improve overall wellbeing.
