Blackheads are tiny, stubborn dark spots that often appear on the nose, chin, or other parts of the face. They form when pores get clogged with oil, dirt, and dead skin cells. While it’s tempting to squeeze or pop them, doing so can damage your skin. Frequent salon treatments, on the other hand, can be painful and expensive. So, how do you deal with blackheads safely at home?

What are blackheads?

“Blackheads occur when pores get clogged with excess oil, dead skin, and dirt that oxidise on exposure to air, turning black. They’re commonly seen on the nose and T-zone and are often the first sign of breakouts,” explains Dr Rinky Kapoor, Dermatologist and Co-Founder, The Esthetic Clinics.

What causes blackheads?

Blackheads are common in oily skin, but they can affect anyone. Poor cleansing, heavy or comedogenic makeup, diet, lifestyle habits, and pollution can all contribute. If left untreated, they may even expand in size.

Dr Kapoor’s tip: “Avoid squeezing or over-scrubbing. Gentle cleansing and exfoliation are the keys.”


Simple Ways to Prevent and Treat Blackheads

1. Cleanse Gently but Consistently
Wash your face twice daily with a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser to remove excess oil and dirt. Avoid harsh soaps that strip natural oils, as they can trigger more oil production.

2. Add Salicylic Acid and Retinol to Your Routine
Salicylic acid helps dissolve oil and dead cells, while retinol unclogs pores and supports skin renewal. Look for salicylic acid cleansers and use retinol-based creams at night.

3. Exfoliate the Smart Way
Exfoliate 1–2 times a week with chemical exfoliants like AHAs (glycolic acid) and BHAs (salicylic acid). These gently unclog pores without damaging the skin, unlike harsh scrubs.

4. Try Facial Steaming
Steam helps open pores, making blackhead removal easier. Follow up with a blackhead extractor tool or pore strip—but avoid squeezing with nails to prevent scars or infections.

5. Use Clay or Charcoal Masks
Clay and charcoal masks draw out dirt and oil like magnets. Use them once or twice a week to keep blackheads under control, especially if you have oily or combination skin.

6. Don’t Skip Moisturiser
Dry skin produces more oil to compensate, which can worsen blackheads. Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser to maintain hydration without clogging pores.

7. Give Your Skin a Break from Makeup
Take at least one makeup-free day a week. Always use non-comedogenic products and remove makeup thoroughly before bed, as sleeping with makeup is a fast track to new blackheads.
