‘Will Come Back Stronger’: CJP’s Ajinkya Shinde Calls Fresh Protests After Delhi Police Crackdown at Jantar Mantar

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leader Ajinkya Shinde on Saturday called for daily protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.

Addressing a press conference a day after unrest in Delhi, Shinde announced that protests would continue at Jantar Mantar until Kumar was removed from office.

The announcement came after the Delhi Police detained more than 4,000 protesters during a major crackdown on the CJP’s call for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar.

CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were also detained by the Delhi Police upon arriving in the national capital.

Shinde, who was entrusted with leading the protests by Dipke, said, “Every day, there will be marches to Jantar Mantar from now on, until Gyanesh Kumar is sacked as CEC.”

INDIA Bloc Leaders Detained During Protest

The demonstrations also saw the detention of several INDIA bloc leaders, including former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, as they attempted to join the protest.

The detentions came amid escalating opposition protests against the Election Commission’s handling of electoral rolls and its nationwide voter-list revision exercise.

Opposition Accuses CEC Of Favouring BJP

The CJP and opposition parties have accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of favouring the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the revision of electoral rolls. They have demanded his removal over alleged irregularities in the process.

The Election Commission, however, has maintained that the nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is a routine exercise aimed at updating voter lists and removing the names of deceased, duplicate and otherwise ineligible voters.

The latest call for daily demonstrations signals that the confrontation between opposition parties and the poll body is likely to continue, with protesters maintaining their demand for action against the CEC.
