Virat Kohli may be gearing up for something significant, but a return to Test cricket appears firmly off the table
There seems to be a different side to Virat Kohli emerging this year. The usually guarded former India captain has become noticeably more open, speaking candidly about issues he once kept private — from his decision to step away from Test captaincy to personal moments of vulnerability and reflections on his cricket journey.
For a player who had remained relatively reserved in recent years, the shift has been striking. On the field, Kohli continues to deliver for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL, while off the field he has spoken more freely, even brushing aside speculation over his availability for the next World Cup.
The change in tone has naturally sparked questions among fans: Is Kohli preparing for another major transition in his career?
A return to Test cricket, however, appears unlikely. Though recent remarks from his childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma briefly triggered speculation, indications suggest Kohli has firmly moved on from that chapter.
His decision to step away from Tests appeared driven by multiple factors — mental fatigue, personal priorities and a belief that he was no longer meeting the standards he expected from himself. Over his final years in the format, his returns had dipped compared to his peak years, making the decision appear both practical and personal.
The focus now seems to be on One-Day Internationals, a format where Kohli has remained remarkably productive. Despite stepping away from Tests and T20 internationals, ODIs continue to be the format most closely associated with his legacy.
Recent performances suggest he still has significant ambitions left. Strong ODI form has kept him on course for another World Cup campaign and brought him closer to milestones such as Sachin Tendulkar’s landmark record of 100 international centuries.
Still, Indian cricket is evolving. Attention around future planning under figures such as Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar has led to questions about how long Kohli remains central to long-term plans.
What has remained constant through his career is his uncompromising nature. Kohli has consistently shown that he prioritises self-belief and conviction, whether in leadership decisions or career choices.
If there is a larger move ahead, it may not necessarily be immediate retirement. It could simply be a player becoming more reflective, more expressive and increasingly aware that the final phase of a remarkable career has begun.
