Violence Erupts in Belfast After Refugee Charged Over Brutal Stabbing; Buildings and Vehicles Set Ablaze

Violent anti-immigration protests swept across Belfast on Tuesday night, with rioters torching vehicles, setting buildings on fire, and blocking roads following a shocking knife attack allegedly carried out by a Sudanese refugee.

Hundreds of demonstrators, many with their faces covered, gathered at multiple locations across the Northern Irish capital. A bus and several cars were set ablaze, while a residential building near the city center caught fire, forcing residents to evacuate as emergency crews rushed to the scene.

Witnesses described a rapidly escalating situation. Eemran, an engineer of Indian origin who has lived in Belfast for just over a year, said the unrest began with fires being lit in bins before protesters started throwing petrol bombs.

“Suddenly the fire spread, smoke filled the building, and firefighters told us to leave immediately,” he said.

Camila, a Chilean resident who moved to Belfast only a month ago, called the scenes frightening. While acknowledging public anger, she said disagreements should be addressed peacefully rather than through violence.

Police helicopters patrolled the skies as businesses shut early amid fears of further disorder. Similar gatherings were reported in Antrim, about 25 kilometers west of Belfast.

Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill condemned the violence, describing attacks on homes as “disgusting cowardice” and urging calm.

The unrest followed the charging of a 30-year-old Sudanese refugee in connection with a knife attack that was captured on video and widely circulated online. The man faces charges including attempted murder, possession of a bladed weapon in a public place, and making threats to kill. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Authorities confirmed the suspect was granted refugee status after arriving in the UK in 2023 and holds a residence permit valid until 2028. According to Northern Ireland police chief Jon Boutcher, the man had no known links to national security concerns and was not previously known to police.

The graphic footage of the attack shows a man repeatedly slashing another individual in the head and neck before bystanders intervened and restrained him. The victim, a man in his 40s, suffered serious injuries to his face, eyes and back and was hospitalized.

The incident has reignited fierce debate over immigration in Britain. Anti-immigration figures, including Nigel Farage and Rupert Lowe, demanded greater transparency regarding the suspect’s background.

Meanwhile, tech billionaire Elon Musk drew attention after reposting comments from anti-immigration activist Tommy Robinson, calling for continued protests.

The violence comes amid heightened tensions across the UK following recent clashes in Southampton linked to public anger over another high-profile fatal stabbing. Political leaders across Northern Ireland unanimously condemned the Belfast attack, while Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as “horrific” and “sickening.”

Authorities have urged the public not to share the graphic footage online, warning that its circulation risks further inflaming tensions and causing additional distress to those affected.
