Viktor Axelsen, two-time Olympic and world champion, retires from professional badminton

Two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen has announced his retirement from professional badminton at the age of 32, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 16-year career due to persistent back issues.

Axelsen last competed at the BWF China Masters in 2025 before cutting short his season following recurring injury troubles. Despite undergoing surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process, he was unable to return to peak fitness.

Speaking to Badminton Europe, the Danish star said ongoing pain and setbacks in recovery made it impossible for him to train or compete at the highest level, forcing him into the difficult decision to step away from the sport.

Since turning professional in 2010, Axelsen built one of the most decorated careers in badminton history. He won multiple top-tier titles and became only the second non-Asian player to claim two World Championship crowns. He also made history at the Olympics, securing gold medals at Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paris 2024 Olympics, in addition to a bronze at Rio 2016.

A three-time European champion and Thomas Cup winner, Axelsen said medical advice played a key role in his decision. Doctors warned that continued strain could require further surgery, potentially jeopardising his long-term health, leaving him with little choice but to retire.
