US may ease J&K travel advisory as envoy Sergio Gor praises security improvements
The United States may reconsider its travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir following an assessment of the security situation in the Union Territory, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said during his visit to Srinagar.
Gor, who arrived in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday for his first official visit to the region, said the Centre and the Union Territory administration had taken steps to improve security. He indicated that Washington could review its current travel warning, potentially paving the way for more American tourists to visit the region.
“Jammu and Kashmir is an important part of India and an incredibly beautiful place,” Gor said after meeting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar. He also expressed optimism about greater engagement between the US and the region.
What is the current US travel advisory?
The US State Department currently places Jammu and Kashmir under its highest travel advisory level — Level 4, “Do Not Travel” — citing terrorism and civil unrest. The advisory makes an exception for eastern Ladakh and Leh.
The US advisory warns that terrorist attacks and violent civil unrest are possible in Jammu and Kashmir, with particular concerns around the Line of Control and parts of the Kashmir Valley, including Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
A downgrade would therefore represent a significant change in Washington’s assessment of travel risks in the region.
Gor meets Omar Abdullah in Srinagar
During his meeting with Omar Abdullah, Gor discussed India-US relations and opportunities for greater engagement with Jammu and Kashmir.
The visit comes amid efforts to revive tourism in the region following security concerns that have affected visitor numbers. Gor’s comments suggest that improved conditions could encourage Washington to reassess its warning for US citizens.
However, no formal change to the travel advisory had been announced at the time of his remarks. Any revision would ultimately have to be reflected in an official update from the US State Department.
Potential boost for tourism
A relaxation of the US advisory could provide a boost to Jammu and Kashmir’s international tourism sector. American visitors are an important segment of the global tourism market, and a lower advisory level could give potential travellers greater confidence when planning trips to destinations such as Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
The development also comes as other countries continue to maintain travel warnings for parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The UK’s current guidance, for example, advises against all travel to the Union Territory, with limited exceptions.
Gor’s visit and his comments on the region’s security could therefore mark an important step towards changing how international travellers assess Jammu and Kashmir.
For now, US citizens planning a trip should continue to follow the official US State Department advisory, as the reported possibility of a review does not itself constitute a change in the travel warning.
