Too Much Salt Can Harm Your Kidneys: Expert Tips to Cut Down

Many of us enjoy adding extra salt to our meals, from sprinkling it on snacks to consuming processed foods.

While it seems harmless, excessive salt intake can have serious implications for kidney health. Dr. Venkat Subramaniam, Senior Urologist and Executive Director at AINU Hospital, Chennai, highlighted this in an Instagram post on October 23, explaining how too much salt affects the kidneys and offering tips to protect them.

How Much Salt is Too Much?
“Many people underestimate their daily salt intake,” says Dr. Subramaniam. Over time, high salt consumption can lead to kidney stones, high blood pressure, and impaired kidney function. Those already at risk of kidney issues should be especially cautious.

He suggests a simple adjustment: “You don’t need much salt at all. Enhance your food’s flavour naturally using lemon, pepper, and garlic. These ingredients add taste and aroma while reducing reliance on excessive salt. It’s simple and effective, yet not widely practiced.”

Reducing Salt Without Sacrificing Taste
Dr. Subramaniam also warns about hidden salt in processed and packaged foods, which can push daily sodium intake well above recommended limits. “Even if you add minimal salt while cooking, processed foods can significantly increase your total sodium intake. Reading labels and opting for fresh ingredients is crucial to protect your kidneys.”

Small, consistent dietary changes can go a long way in preserving kidney health. “A little awareness and adjustment in your cooking habits can help maintain kidney health for years to come,” Dr. Subramaniam adds.
