Switzerland reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954 after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a tense goalless draw on Tuesday, setting up a last-eight clash with defending champions Argentina.

The final Round of 16 match, played in Vancouver, remained deadlocked through 120 minutes as both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances in a tightly contested encounter.

In the shootout, Colombia’s Davinson Sánchez struck the crossbar before Switzerland’s Manuel Akanji also missed, keeping the contest level. Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel then produced a crucial save to deny Cucho Hernández, handing his side the advantage. Ruben Vargas calmly converted the decisive penalty to seal Switzerland’s historic victory.

Captain Granit Xhaka hailed the achievement, describing the current Swiss squad as “a special generation” capable of competing with the world’s best despite representing a smaller footballing nation.

Colombia, who had conceded only one goal in their previous four matches, looked dangerous early on when Gustavo Puerta forced Kobel into an excellent save. Switzerland responded after the first cooling break, with Camilo Vargas denying Fabian Rieder and Dan Ndoye.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams defending resolutely. Colombia’s Luis Suárez fired wide, while star winger Luis Díaz was kept largely under control by the Swiss defence. Ndoye came closest in stoppage time, sending a shot across goal with no teammate able to apply the finishing touch.

Extra time produced the game’s best opportunities. Colombia’s Jhon Lucumí headed against the crossbar from a corner before Kobel denied Jaminton Campaz with a superb save. At the other end, Camilo Vargas kept out Zeki Amdouni’s effort, while Campaz squandered a late chance to win the match.

With neither side able to find a breakthrough, the contest went to penalties, where Switzerland held their nerve to secure a memorable victory.

Colombia forward Luis Suárez said his team’s campaign should still be viewed positively despite the heartbreaking exit.

Switzerland will now face defending champions Argentina in the quarter-finals in Kansas City on Saturday after Lionel Messi’s side defeated Egypt 3-2 in an earlier Round of 16 thriller.
