Sri Lanka Tests could shape futures of Gambhir, Agarkar as BCCI reviews key roles

India’s upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka could prove decisive not only for the team’s World Test Championship campaign but also for the future of key decision-makers within Indian cricket.

With India under pressure after a string of disappointing results, another setback could intensify scrutiny on head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. While top BCCI sources indicate Gambhir continues to enjoy strong backing and is expected to remain in charge until the 2027 ODI World Cup, Agarkar’s future is less certain.

According to sources, the BCCI is expected to take a final call on Agarkar’s tenure during its Annual General Meeting in September. Although he is eligible for another year, discussions regarding his future have already begun.

The review comes amid broader concerns over the team’s recent performances and selection decisions. Rohit Sharma’s ODI future also remains uncertain, with selectors and team management reportedly divided over whether the veteran opener should continue until next year’s World Cup. However, the BCCI is said to be evaluating his place on a series-by-series basis, and his century in the final ODI at Lord’s has strengthened his case.

Reports linking National Cricket Academy (Centre of Excellence) chief VVS Laxman with the chief selector’s role face a practical hurdle, as the COE head currently earns significantly more than the chief selector, requiring a major restructuring of the salary framework.

The Centre of Excellence has also faced criticism over injury management after fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s late withdrawal from the Sri Lanka Test series exposed concerns over return-to-play protocols. Selectors had expected Bumrah to be available before he was ruled out, prompting the inclusion of pacer Auqib Nabi as his replacement.

Meanwhile, there is positive news on the fitness front. Top-order batter Sai Sudharsan is expected to recover from a foot injury in time for the Sri Lanka Tests. He is required to complete three batting sessions before receiving medical clearance. With Devdutt Padikkal available as backup, the team management remains confident about its options at No. 3.
