Shreyas Iyer emerges as frontrunner for India T20I captaincy; Suryakumar Yadav’s future under cloud

India could have a new T20I captain when they next take the field for the upcoming series against Ireland and England, with Shreyas Iyer emerging as the leading contender to take over the role.

If appointed, Iyer would replace Suryakumar Yadav, who captained India to the T20 World Cup title earlier this year. While head coach Gautam Gambhir is expected to be consulted before a final decision is made, indications suggest the selectors are leaning towards a long-term leadership transition.

The selection committee is understood to be looking beyond immediate assignments and identifying a captain capable of leading India through the next two T20 World Cups. Despite guiding India to global success, Suryakumar’s recent form has raised concerns. The Mumbai Indians batter endured a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, scoring 270 runs in 13 matches as his side finished ninth.

Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan among leadership options

Although Iyer’s experience and consistent performances in the IPL give him a clear advantage, Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan are also being viewed as potential future leaders in India’s T20 setup.

Should Iyer be handed the captaincy, one of Tilak or Ishan is likely to be considered for the vice-captain’s role as the selectors begin planning for the future.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the squad for the Asian Games soon, with India set to send a full-strength side to defend the gold medal it won in 2022.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi set for T20 opportunity

Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is also expected to earn a place in India’s T20 squad following a record-breaking IPL season. The 15-year-old opener dominated IPL 2026, amassing 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.20 and sweeping the tournament’s post-season awards.

With India’s top order already featuring Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, opportunities may initially be limited. However, selectors are expected to give the left-handed batter a chance during the seven-match T20I leg of the Ireland and England tour, which begins on June 26.

The upcoming series could therefore mark the beginning of a new era for India’s T20 side, both in terms of leadership and emerging talent.
