Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has resulted in more than two million military casualties, with Russian forces accounting for the majority of losses, according to a study released Wednesday by the US-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

The think tank said combined Russian and Ukrainian casualties have surpassed the two-million mark since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

CSIS estimated that Russian forces have suffered between 1.4 million total casualties, including killed, wounded and missing personnel. Of these, around 400,000 to 450,000 Russian troops are estimated to have been killed.

Ukrainian forces, meanwhile, are estimated to have suffered between 525,000 and 625,000 casualties, including approximately 125,000 to 150,000 fatalities during the same period, the report said.

The study noted that Russian military deaths in Ukraine exceed the total number of US military fatalities in all conflicts since World War II by more than four times.

It also said the gap in battlefield losses has widened, with the ratio of Russian to Ukrainian casualties estimated to have reached around 8 to 1 during the first half of this year.
