Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi discussed bilateral cooperation and the ongoing crises in Ukraine and Iran during a regional security meeting in Azerbaijan, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

The two ministers met on the sidelines of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), where they reviewed the progress of bilateral ties and discussed relations with the United States, according to the ministry.

Both sides praised the development of their “comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation” and coordinated their positions on bilateral political dialogue, the statement said.

The meeting comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed their strategic partnership at a regional summit in August, highlighting prospects for deeper cooperation between the two countries.

Russia and China have both called for an end to the conflict involving Iran, warning that further escalation could threaten stability across the region.

Beijing has also maintained its “no limits” partnership with Moscow throughout the more than four-year war in Ukraine, while publicly advocating diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
