Rani Mukerji Ditches Gown For Elegant Black Saree At Sabyasachi’s New York Fashion Week Show

Rani Mukerji attended Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s New York Fashion Week showcase in Manhattan on September 15, turning heads in an elegant all-black ensemble.

Sabyasachi made his return to New York Fashion Week after 20 years, drawing several prominent names from the worlds of cinema and fashion. Alongside Rani, the guest list included stylist Anaita Shroff Adjania, actors Sendhil Ramamurthy, Sarita Choudhury and Poorna Jagannathan, designer Prabal Gurung, model Madhulika Sharma and fashion creator Olivia Palermo. Supermodel Christy Turlington opened the show.

Rani Mukerji’s Black Saree Look

For the high-profile fashion event, Rani opted for a classic Indian saree instead of a conventional gown. She wore a simple black silk saree, pairing it with a sleeveless black blouse featuring a V-neckline.

The monochrome styling gave the traditional silhouette a sleek and contemporary edge. Rani kept her accessories understated, completing the look with oversized black sunglasses, delicate gold earrings, a few rings, a black-and-gold clutch and black pumps.

Her long, dark hair was worn loose and swept over one shoulder, adding to the effortless glamour of the ensemble.

Simple Yet Sophisticated

Rani’s look stood out for its restraint. The saree featured no heavy embroidery or sequins, while the actor avoided excessive jewellery. Instead, the outfit relied on its clean drape, strong proportions and monochrome palette.

The sleeveless V-neck blouse added a modern line to the traditional saree, while the minimal accessories kept the overall appearance polished and sophisticated.

Inside Sabyasachi’s NYFW Return

Sabyasachi returned to New York Fashion Week after two decades with his “Bengal Byzantine Broadway” collection, which blended Bengali craftsmanship and Indian heritage with contemporary global fashion.

The 72-look Spring/Summer ready-to-wear collection combined traditional influences with utility-driven Western silhouettes. Layered denim, classic button-downs, jackets and slips were paired with South Asian-inspired details.

The showcase also marked the launch of Sabyasachi’s multi-year fine jewellery partnership with The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The jewellery collection featured solid-gold and gemstone-studded Byzantine revival cuffs, Etruscan-inspired pendants and intricately crafted rings.
