Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said countries that have contributed the least to climate change are facing some of its worst consequences, calling for greater fairness and equity in global climate action during his address to Seychelles’ National Assembly.

Addressing lawmakers during his three-day visit to the island nation, Modi said the Global South, particularly small island countries, is among the regions most vulnerable to rising climate impacts.

“The Global South, and especially the island nations, are the most impacted by climate change,” Modi said, pointing to visible effects on coastlines, marine ecosystems, weather patterns and local communities.

He stressed that climate action should be guided by the principles of fairness, responsibility and equity, saying nations with fewer contributions to global warming should not bear a disproportionate share of its impact.

Modi said India and Seychelles share a common vision for inclusive development and will continue working together to address challenges facing the Global South.

Highlighting the strategic importance of bilateral ties, he said the Indian Ocean connects the two countries rather than separating them, describing Seychelles as an important partner in India’s regional vision.

The prime minister also proposed expanding cooperation between the two nations in areas including fisheries, marine science, coastal management, renewable energy and sustainable tourism.

Modi’s address focused on climate vulnerability among island nations, stronger cooperation between India and Seychelles, and a shared commitment to advancing the interests of developing countries.
