NHS Doctor Warns: “Never Use Scented Soap to Wash Your Vagina,” Dispels 4 Common Myths
Cleaning your vagina doesn’t need to be complicated. Despite the flood of products promising to “freshen things up,” the truth is simple — your vagina takes care of itself. UK-based GP Dr. Amir Khan, who works with the National Health Service (NHS), recently addressed common misconceptions about vaginal hygiene in an Instagram video titled “Vaginal Myths That Need to Disappear.” His message: keep it simple and ditch the myths.
Myth #1: You need special soaps or washes
“You don’t need special soaps, wipes, or sprays,” Dr. Khan said. “The vagina is self-cleaning with its own balance of bacteria and pH. Scented products can actually mess that up and cause infections. Step away from the scented soap.”
Myth #2: Vaginal discharge means infection
Daily discharge is completely normal, Dr. Khan explained. “Discharge doesn’t mean something’s wrong. Most women have it every day — it’s how the vagina keeps itself healthy. Only if there’s a sudden change in color, smell, or texture should you get it checked.”
Myth #3: A natural scent means poor hygiene
“Every vagina has a natural scent — it’s meant to,” he said. “If the smell suddenly changes or becomes strong, then see your GP. But otherwise, you’re not supposed to smell like a coconut candle.”
Myth #4: A tampon can get lost inside you
Dr. Khan reassured that this is physically impossible: “Your cervix acts like a closed door. Nothing can pass through it. A tampon can get stuck higher up, but it’s not lost — and your doctor has seen it all before. Don’t panic, and definitely don’t use kitchen utensils to retrieve it.”
Concluding his post, Dr. Khan reminded viewers, “Your vagina has been looking after itself perfectly for millions of years. Trust her — she’s got it.”
