Chennai Super Kings will be without their talisman MS Dhoni for the first two weeks of the Indian Premier League 2026 season after the veteran wicketkeeper-batter was sidelined with a calf strain.

The franchise confirmed on Saturday, March 28, that Dhoni is expected to miss at least the first four matches as he continues his recovery. His absence comes as a significant blow to CSK, given his leadership and finishing prowess.

Matches Dhoni Likely to Miss

  • March 30: Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings
  • April 3: Chennai Super Kings vs Punjab Kings
  • April 5: Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Chennai Super Kings
  • April 11: Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Capitals

Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, has continued to feature in the IPL and remains one of its most influential figures even at 44. Last season, he played all 14 matches, scoring 196 runs at a strike rate above 135 and briefly returning to captaincy after Ruturaj Gaikwad was injured.

Who Replaces Dhoni Behind the Stumps?

In Dhoni’s absence, CSK are expected to turn to Sanju Samson as the primary wicketkeeping option. The Indian batter, who joined from Rajasthan Royals in a high-profile trade, is also set to open the innings and brings recent experience as a keeper from international tournaments.

Another option for the role is Urvil Patel, though indications suggest Samson is the frontrunner.

CSK begin their campaign against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 at the Barsapara Stadium. Dhoni’s absence will test the squad’s depth early in the tournament, with added pressure on the team to adapt without their iconic leader.
