MS Dhoni drops strongest retirement hint yet: ‘My body is a little weak’

MS Dhoni stopped short of announcing retirement at Chepauk, but his words after Chennai Super Kings’s final home game of IPL 2026 hinted strongly at an uncertain future.

Following CSK’s five-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Dhoni joined teammates during a lap of honour after missing the entire season because of a calf injury. The occasion carried the feel of a farewell, with CSK’s playoff hopes fading and fans watching Dhoni walk around Chepauk rather than return to the field.

Former CSK teammate Suresh Raina later revealed that he urged Dhoni to return for another season, arguing that IPL 2026 could not be considered a proper farewell since he did not play a single game.

“I told him, ‘You have given IPL 2026 a missed call. It won’t count. You have to come back next year,’” Raina said. “He said, ‘Nahi yaar, body thoda waisa hai (my body is a little weak).’”

Dhoni’s response quickly became the focus of discussion. Without making any official announcement, the remark appeared to be his clearest acknowledgment yet that physical limitations may be becoming a major factor in his future decisions.

Raina said he tried to keep the possibility alive by reminding Dhoni that fans still wanted him back. According to him, Dhoni replied, “Let me see.”

That brief response has left CSK supporters with a glimmer of hope, though the broader picture appears uncertain. Dhoni spent the entire IPL 2026 season sidelined with a calf injury, and despite recovery efforts, never returned to action.

For a franchise that has long revolved around Dhoni’s presence, the season felt unusual. After years of being CSK’s constant figure, his role this season became one of waiting and rehabilitation rather than match-winning performances.

There was no formal farewell speech, no retirement declaration and no final goodbye at Chepauk. But Dhoni’s quiet admission — “my body is a little weak” — may have said more than a dramatic announcement ever could.
