Monsoon Digestion Woes? Ayurveda Expert Shares 5 Gut-Healing Habits for the Rainy Season
The monsoon season brings much-needed relief from the summer heat—but also ushers in a wave of digestive issues. Bloating, sluggish digestion, acid reflux, and low energy are common complaints during this time, largely due to a weakened digestive system.
According to Dr. Smita Naram, co-founder of Ayushakti, the solution lies in mindful eating and gentle detoxification to keep digestion strong and immunity balanced despite the season’s damp unpredictability.
Why Monsoon Affects Digestion
Dr. Naram explains that from an Ayurvedic perspective, the monsoon slows down Agni, or the digestive fire. “When digestion weakens, toxins (Ama) accumulate, leading to fatigue, lowered immunity, and dosha imbalances,” she told HT Lifestyle. This makes the body more vulnerable to illness and gut-related discomfort.
To counteract this, Dr. Naram recommends five essential habits that can help reset your gut and support overall wellness throughout the rainy season:
1. Start Your Day with a Detox Kadha
Kick off your morning with a warm herbal tea (kadha) made from ingredients like cumin, ginger, tulsi, or mint. These herbs stimulate digestion, detoxify the body, and strengthen natural immunity.
2. Sip on CCF Tea
A well-known Ayurvedic blend, CCF tea (Cumin-Coriander-Fennel) helps reduce inflammation and supports gut balance.
-
Boil 1 teaspoon each of cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds in water.
-
Add a slice of fresh ginger if desired.
Drinking this in the morning rekindles your digestive fire and prepares the body to absorb nutrients better.
3. Choose Light, Warm, and Wholesome Meals
Avoid heavy, oily, or cold foods. Instead, go for:
-
Breakfast: Mung dal chillas or vegetable soup.
-
Lunch/Dinner: Mung dal khichdi cooked with ghee and paired with seasonal steamed vegetables like bottle gourd, ash gourd, or zucchini.
Spices like ginger, cumin, coriander, curry leaves, and hing enhance flavor while aiding digestion and reducing bloating.
4. Avoid These Foods
Certain foods can aggravate doshas and further impair digestion:
-
Fermented foods: Idlis, dosas, curd, tomatoes, tamarind-based dishes.
-
Cold/processed foods: Carbonated drinks, fried snacks, and raw salads.
These can disturb the Vata and Kapha doshas, leading to sluggish digestion and toxic buildup—often reflected in skin breakouts.
5. Try a 7-Day Clean Eating Plan
Dr. Naram suggests a simple, intentional regimen to reset your gut:
-
Eat only when genuinely hungry.
-
Drink detox teas throughout the day.
-
Consume steamed vegetables and mung soup.
This gentle cleanse can boost energy, improve digestion, and even clear mental fog—without any starvation involved.
