Meet Indian woman who set Guinness World Record with nearly 9-foot-long hair: ‘Haven’t cut it since 2015’

In an era of fast-changing beauty trends and quick salon treatments, a woman from Uttarakhand has shown how patience and dedication can lead to an extraordinary achievement. Renu Dhariyal, from Haldwani, has officially secured the Guinness World Record for the longest hair on a living person (female).

No haircut since 2015

According to Guinness World Records, Renu’s hair measures an astonishing 271.50 cm (8 ft 10 in), with her long, dark tresses trailing across the floor. Her record was verified in Haldwani in April, surpassing the previous record held by Ukraine’s Aliia Nasyrova, whose hair measured 257.33 cm (8 ft 5.3 in).

Renu has been growing her hair continuously since 2015, drawing inspiration from Indian cultural traditions that associate long hair with beauty and heritage.

“I have been growing my hair continuously since 2015. In Indian culture, long hair is considered a symbol of extreme beauty and tradition, which is what inspired me to grow it so long,” she told Guinness World Records.

“I have never cut my hair since 2015,” she added.

Renu Dhariyal’s hair-care routine

Maintaining hair that stretches nearly nine feet requires considerable time and patience. Images released after her record recognition show her hair cascading across furniture and beds and surrounding her as she sits on the floor.

To keep her hair manageable during everyday activities, Renu ties her thick locks into a long plait. She also avoids expensive treatments and chemical-based products, instead relying on traditional hair-care methods.

“It takes a lot of patience to maintain long hair. I spend hours washing and detangling my hair,” she said.

“My secret is completely natural. I stay away from chemical products and also share the secrets of chemical-free homemade hair oils and homemade shampoos I make on my YouTube channel,” she added.

Renu is also a content creator who shares her hair-care and wellness routines with her followers. For her, however, the Guinness record represents more than an unusual personal achievement. She hopes it will put Uttarakhand on the global map and encourage others to embrace their cultural heritage.

Renu’s extraordinary hair has naturally become a source of fascination, attracting attention both in public and on social media.

“With such long hair, whenever I step out or come on social media, people are surprised, and I get a lot of appreciation and attention,” she said.
