Lavrov Arrives in US for G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Amid Global Tensions
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in the United States on Friday to attend a two-day meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Atlanta, Georgia, Russia’s state-owned TASS news agency reported.
The gathering comes amid mounting international tensions, with diplomatic deadlocks over the US-Iran war and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, while persistently high oil prices add to global economic concerns.
The meeting is also taking place just days ahead of crucial US midterm elections and is expected to lay the groundwork for the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December in Miami, at President Donald Trump’s Doral resort.
Moscow said on Thursday that Lavrov would use his address at the meeting to oppose international sanctions, which Russia has repeatedly criticised as tools of economic and political pressure.
Lavrov’s visit comes ahead of another round of talks involving officials from Russia, Ukraine and the United States aimed at exploring a possible agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
