Indian pilot Smit Machchhar, who was allegedly stabbed by his co-pilot aboard a flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv last month, will receive Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism for his bravery in preventing a potential catastrophe, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said on Thursday.

Herzog praised Machchhar for his courage and professionalism, saying his actions helped avert a major disaster.

“Captain Machchhar’s sheer bravery and sound professionalism helped avert a catastrophe. Once he regains his strength, it will be my privilege to award him, on behalf of the people of Israel, the State of Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism,” Herzog said.

Co-Pilot Allegedly Stabbed Indian Captain Mid-Flight

According to reports, Machchhar was stabbed by his co-pilot in an alleged attempt to crash the aircraft. The flydubai jet, which was carrying 174 people, reportedly plunged nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds during the incident.

Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, according to a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.

The captain was reportedly covered in blood and lying on the floor when he managed to open the door, allowing passengers and crew members to overpower the co-pilot.

Second Crew Takes Control Of Aircraft

Following the confrontation, a second pair of flydubai pilots aboard the aircraft took control of the jet and successfully landed it in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Machchhar’s actions were credited with helping prevent a potential disaster involving the 174 people on board.

The planned award recognises his role in the incident and his efforts to protect passengers and crew members despite sustaining serious injuries.

President Herzog said he would personally present the honour once the Indian captain had recovered sufficiently.
