Inside the world of nude cruises: The clothing-optional vacations attracting thousands of travellers

Before you scroll any further, here’s one thing to know: nude cruises are not about public displays of sexuality or anything explicit. Instead, they are a niche travel experience built around naturism, body positivity and the freedom of living without clothes in a non-sexual environment.

One of the best-known operators in this space is Bare Necessities, a US-based travel company affiliated with the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR). The company charters full-ship clothing-optional cruises and caters primarily to naturists — people who embrace social nudity as a lifestyle choice.

The ‘Big Nude Boat’

The company’s flagship voyage, known as the “Big Nude Boat,” is an 11-day Caribbean cruise aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line vessel. The itinerary takes more than 2,000 passengers to destinations including Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts, Antigua and the Dominican Republic.

Aside from the clothing-optional aspect, the experience resembles a luxury cruise holiday. Guests have access to fine dining restaurants, bars and lounges, theatres, fitness centres, spas, casinos, swimming pools and private island excursions.

According to Bare Necessities Vice President Kate Whitmore, the cruises often attract first-time travellers curious about naturism, while a large proportion of guests return year after year.

“These cruises are great for the nudism-curious. It’s not for everyone, and that’s okay, but if you’re intrigued, it might be your kind of holiday,” Whitmore told Business Insider.

Cabin prices for upcoming voyages range from around $2,000 to more than $33,000 per person, depending on accommodation type and location on the ship.

More about naturism than nudity

At the heart of the experience is naturism — a lifestyle philosophy centred on voluntary, non-sexual nudity. Advocates say it promotes body acceptance, confidence and a stronger connection with nature.

Supporters often describe social nudity as a levelling experience where outward markers of status, fashion and wealth disappear, allowing people to interact more openly and comfortably.

Are passengers nude all the time?

Not exactly.

Cruise operators maintain strict rules to ensure the environment remains respectful and family-friendly. Guests may remain unclothed when the ship is at sea or anchored in designated areas, but clothing is generally required while docked in ports.

There are also hygiene rules, including requirements to sit on personal towels when using shared seating areas. Certain dining venues require standard attire, while buffets and casual spaces may remain clothing-optional.

The cruises prohibit inappropriate behaviour, fetish attire and non-consensual photography. Violations of the code of conduct can result in passengers being removed from the ship at the next port without a refund.

A growing niche in travel

While nude cruising remains a niche segment of the tourism industry, its popularity has grown steadily among travellers seeking unconventional experiences centred on relaxation, self-expression and community.

For participants, the appeal lies less in nudity itself and more in the sense of freedom, acceptance and escape from everyday expectations — all while enjoying a traditional cruise holiday across some of the world’s most popular destinations.
