Indian Premier League 2026 playoff race heats up as Royal Challengers Bengaluru hold edge in top-two battle; mid-table scramble keeps qualification fight wide open
The race for the Indian Premier League 2026 playoffs is heading toward a dramatic finish as the league stage enters its final phase, with no team having officially secured qualification yet.
Eight franchises are still mathematically alive in the playoff race, making every remaining fixture crucial. While Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants may be out of contention themselves, both sides could still play spoiler by damaging the hopes of rival teams in the closing rounds.
At the top of the standings, three teams have already reached 14 points and appear closest to securing qualification. Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru currently lead that group, narrowly ahead of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans on net run rate.
One win away from qualification
RCB, SRH and GT each need just one more victory to move to 16 points — a tally that is usually enough to guarantee a playoff spot. However, all three teams are also chasing a top-two finish, which would provide an additional chance to reach the final.
RCB’s remaining fixtures come against teams still fighting for survival, making their path particularly tricky.

PBKS, CSK and RR still in the hunt
Punjab Kings were once considered favourites for a playoff berth, but four straight defeats have severely dented their campaign. Despite the slump, the equation remains straightforward — two wins from their final three games could still take them into the top four.
Chennai Super Kings have also fought their way back into contention after an inconsistent start to the season. Two victories from their last three matches would lift them to 16 points and potentially keep alive hopes of a record-extending sixth IPL title.
Rajasthan Royals find themselves in a similar position. After a promising start, their campaign lost momentum midway through the season, leaving them under pressure heading into the final stretch.

KKR’s late resurgence
Kolkata Knight Riders appeared out of contention after a poor start to the season, but the three-time champions have revived their campaign with four consecutive wins.
The late surge has brought KKR back into playoff calculations, though the challenge ahead remains difficult. They still have four matches left and likely need victories in all of them to secure qualification.
However, recent performances suggest the side has finally found balance and momentum at the perfect time.

DC hanging on
Delhi Capitals kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a thrilling three-wicket win over Punjab Kings in a high-scoring contest at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.
The result lifted DC to seventh place with 10 points, but qualification remains complicated. Even if Delhi win both their remaining matches, they can only finish on 14 points — a total that may not be enough.
As a result, Delhi are likely to need favourable outcomes elsewhere if they are to sneak into the playoffs.
