India vs Pakistan hockey rivalry: Head-to-head record, World Cup history and what’s at stake
Just as in cricket, the numbers behind India and Pakistan’s greatest sporting rivalry do not fully capture the hype surrounding it. Yet, when the two sides meet at the 2026 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup on Wednesday, the 10,000-capacity Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands, will be packed for a crucial Pool D clash.
With a place in the next round at stake, the match has become a do-or-die contest for Pakistan, while India need only a draw to progress.
India vs Pakistan hockey rivalry: A history of dominance
The India-Pakistan hockey rivalry dates back to the 1956 Olympics, when India won their first meeting 1-0. Pakistan soon emerged as the stronger side, beating India in the 1960 Rome Olympics final to claim their first Olympic gold.
India responded by defeating Pakistan in the 1964 Tokyo final, but Pakistan dominated much of the rivalry in the following decades.
Pakistan won nine of 13 meetings against India in the 1970s, followed by 22 victories in the 1980s, 13 in the 1990s and 27 in the 2000s.
India’s defining triumph during that period came in the 1975 World Cup final, when they defeated Pakistan 2-1 to win their only men’s World Cup title.
Pakistan have won the World Cup a record four times and claimed three Olympic gold medals, while India have eight Olympic titles and one World Cup crown.
India have turned the rivalry around
While Pakistan dominated the rivalry for decades, the balance has shifted dramatically in recent years.
Pakistan still lead the overall head-to-head record, having won 82 of 183 meetings compared with India’s 69 victories, with 32 matches ending in draws.
But India have been the dominant side in recent encounters. Pakistan’s last victory over India came in the 2016 Champions Trophy, and they have since gone eight matches without beating their neighbours.
India also defeated Pakistan 7-1 and 4-3 during the European leg of the Pro League earlier this year.
India vs Pakistan Hockey World Cup record
The two teams have met five times at the Hockey World Cup, with India winning three matches and Pakistan two.
India have scored 10 goals in their three victories, while Pakistan have scored seven across their two wins.
Their last World Cup encounter came in 2010 in New Delhi, where India secured a 4-1 victory. The rivals have not met at the tournament since, with Pakistan missing the 2014 and 2023 editions.
Wednesday’s match will therefore be their first World Cup meeting in 16 years.
Why is the 2026 clash crucial?
India opened their campaign with a 3-1 win over Wales but then suffered a 4-1 defeat to England after conceding three goals in the second half.
Pakistan lost 4-1 to England before drawing 3-3 with Wales.
India currently have three points from two matches, while Pakistan have one. England have already secured their place in the next round after winning both games.
India need at least a draw to advance, whereas Pakistan must win to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
Who has the edge?
On recent form, India clearly hold the advantage. Their two wins over Pakistan in the Pro League earlier this year underline the gap between the sides.
However, the stakes could make Wednesday’s contest very different. India are playing for progression, while Pakistan are fighting to stay alive in the tournament.
With the historic rivalry, World Cup qualification and Pakistan’s survival all on the line, the latest India-Pakistan chapter promises to be far bigger than the numbers suggest.
