India name Sri Lanka Test squad: Bumrah awaits clearance, Sundar out, Saransh Jain earns maiden call-up

India have announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka, with Shubman Gill retaining the captaincy and KL Rahul named vice-captain. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and batter Sai Sudharsan have been included, though their availability remains subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

The squad features Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel as wicketkeepers, while Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav lead a spin attack bolstered by Manav Suthar and surprise inclusion Saransh Jain. Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar complete the pace unit.

The biggest talking point is the maiden senior India call-up for 33-year-old Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Saransh Jain, who has earned his opportunity after years of consistent performances in domestic cricket.

Jain strengthened his case during India A’s recent tour of Sri Lanka, starring in the second unofficial Test with a six-wicket match haul and an unbeaten 70 as India A sealed a 10-wicket victory and the series 1-0. His familiarity with Sri Lankan conditions and ability to contribute with both bat and off-spin make him a valuable addition, especially with Washington Sundar unavailable for the opening Test.

India have opted for a spin-heavy squad in anticipation of Sri Lankan conditions, with Jadeja, Kuldeep, Suthar and Jain offering multiple bowling options.

The team will play a four-day practice match in Colombo from August 7 before the two-match Test series begins.
