Imtiaz Ali on Jab We Met 2: ‘Some things are best left untouched’

What happened to Geet and Aditya after Jab We Met? It’s a question fans may keep asking—but one that, officially, will likely remain unanswered.

In a candid conversation, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali said he has no plans to revisit the story with a sequel, nor to make a follow-up to Tamasha.

“I do keep hearing about it. To those who ask me, I say, ‘I made Love Aaj Kal 2 as well—it didn’t do that well,’” he remarked, pointing out that sequels don’t guarantee success or audience love.

Ali emphasised that he would only return to a story if it genuinely inspired him. “If something comes strongly to me as a filmmaker, then I will. But especially for Jab We Met, I don’t think so. Some things are best left untouched,” he said.

For him, preserving the legacy of films like Jab We Met and Tamasha matters more than extending them. He added that filmmaking, in his view, should not begin as a calculated, commercial move.

“Good films can’t be made as money-making plans. They have to come from a place where you feel, ‘this is a story I want to be part of,’” he explained.
