Fortis Delhi Gastroenterologist Highlights Incredible Health Benefits of Haldi: Anti-Inflammatory, Anti-Ageing, and More
Turmeric (haldi), a staple spice in Indian kitchens, is more than just a flavour enhancer—it’s a potent health booster, say experts.
Dr. Shubham Vatsya, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, Delhi, shared on Instagram on December 20 how this golden spice can significantly improve overall health and how to maximise its benefits.
Health Benefits of Turmeric (Haldi)
Turmeric comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and is rich in curcumin, a compound scientifically shown to reduce chronic inflammation. Dr. Vatsya highlighted its benefits for conditions such as arthritis, gut inflammation, and metabolic issues like PCOS.
“Curcumin is a strong antioxidant that neutralises free radicals and slows down ageing, skin damage, and brain degeneration,” he said, adding that it is “equally healthy for the heart.” The compound also protects the endothelial lining of blood vessels, which is often the first site of inflammation.
How to Maximise Turmeric’s Benefits
Dr. Vatsya cautioned that the powdered turmeric commonly found in kitchens does not provide these benefits efficiently because curcumin is poorly absorbed by the body. To boost absorption, turmeric—ideally unprocessed—should be consumed with black pepper and healthy fats, which can increase curcumin uptake by up to 2,000 times.
“Turmeric isn’t just a kitchen staple or a passing trend,” Dr. Vatsya wrote. “When used the right way, it supports inflammation control, antioxidant defence, metabolic health, and heart protection at a cellular level.”
In short, with the right combination, haldi can do much more than add colour and flavour to your dishes—it can be a powerful ally for your health.
