Donald Trump says Giorgia Meloni lacks ‘courage’ on Iran war: Report
Donald Trump on Tuesday sharply criticised Giorgia Meloni—long seen as one of his closest European allies—over her refusal to support a potential war with Iran.
“I’m shocked at her. I thought she had courage, but I was wrong,” Trump said in an interview with Italian daily Corriere della Sera.
The remarks came a day after Meloni described as “unacceptable” Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo XIV, who has repeatedly called for an end to the conflict in the Middle East.
“She’s unacceptable because she doesn’t mind that Iran has a nuclear weapon and would blow up Italy in two minutes if they had the chance,” Trump said.
Meloni, Italy’s right-wing leader since October 2022, has often acted as a bridge between the US and Europe despite policy differences. However, Trump indicated their ties may be cooling, noting they had not spoken recently. “She doesn’t help us with NATO. She doesn’t want to help get rid of a nuclear-armed Iran. Very sad… She’s much different than I thought,” he said.
He also took aim at NATO, calling it a “paper tiger,” and criticised European countries for not being willing to defend the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.
Trump further argued that Meloni had changed, adding that “Italy is not the same country,” while blaming immigration for broader challenges across Europe.
Back home, Meloni drew support from both allies and rivals. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to Western unity, stressing that such alliances must be built on “loyalty, respect, and honesty.” He added that Meloni remains firm in expressing her views and defending Italy’s interests.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Elly Schlein criticised Trump’s remarks as a “serious lack of respect,” reiterating Italy’s constitutional stance against war.
