Cristiano Ronaldo, Worth $1.2 Billion, Fined Just $285 By Portugal For Camp Walkout
Cristiano Ronaldo, the world’s highest-paid footballer, has been fined 255 euros (approximately $285 or Rs 27,000) by the Portuguese Football Federation for walking out of the national team’s camp during the recent Nations League fixtures.
The fine is a relatively small amount for the football superstar, whose estimated annual earnings stand at $300 million and whose net worth is estimated at $1.2 billion. At his projected earnings rate, Ronaldo would make roughly the equivalent of the fine in around 30 seconds.
Ronaldo recently became the first active athlete to surpass $2 billion in career pretax earnings. According to Forbes estimates, he is expected to earn approximately $300 million in 2026. This includes an estimated $250 million from Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr during the 2026-27 season and another $50 million from endorsements and other business ventures.
Ronaldo Suspended For 30 Days From Portugal Team
Alongside the financial penalty, Ronaldo has also been suspended from the Portuguese national team for 30 days.
According to an Associated Press report, the suspension began on October 1, the day Portugal faced Denmark. With 19 days of the suspension already served, Ronaldo is expected to become available for Portugal’s next Nations League match against Denmark on November 14.
However, his return to the playing XI will depend on Portugal coach Jorge Jesus and whether he decides to bring the veteran forward back into the team, potentially even as a substitute.
Why Did Cristiano Ronaldo Walk Out Of Portugal Camp?
Ronaldo’s departure from the national team camp followed a dispute over his playing time during the recent Nations League fixtures.
The controversy began after Jesus did not field Ronaldo in Portugal’s match against Norway on September 27, despite the forward having played in the opening victory over Wales.
Ronaldo subsequently left the camp and launched a strong criticism of the coach, accusing Jesus of breaking an agreement to give him playing time.
The incident prompted disciplinary action from the Portuguese football authorities, resulting in the fine and suspension.
Portugal Qualify Despite Ronaldo’s Absence
Despite the controversy surrounding their captain, Portugal continued their Nations League campaign successfully.
The team defeated Denmark and Norway again to secure qualification for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League.
Ronaldo’s expected availability for the November 14 fixture could provide Portugal with another attacking option, although his selection will ultimately rest with Jesus.
For Ronaldo, the financial penalty is minor compared with his enormous earnings. The bigger question is whether the dispute with the coach will affect his role in Portugal’s upcoming matches.
