Cristiano Ronaldo Provisionally Suspended After Portugal Disciplinary Probe

Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after it opened disciplinary proceedings against the Portugal captain over his departure from the national team’s training camp ahead of a UEFA Nations League match against Denmark.

The decision, announced on Saturday, October 10, follows an incident involving the 41-year-old forward and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus during the September international break. The federation’s disciplinary body has classified the case as urgent, but a final decision on any further punishment is yet to be announced.

Why Has Cristiano Ronaldo Been Suspended?

The disciplinary action stems from Ronaldo’s decision to leave Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen, Denmark, on September 30, following a disagreement with Jesus over his role in the team.

Ronaldo had been an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway on September 27. He later claimed that the coach had previously agreed to manage his playing time but subsequently indicated that he would feature for around 30 minutes against Norway.

According to Ronaldo, he warmed up during the match but was not brought onto the pitch. He accused Jesus of breaking his word and said the incident damaged the trust between them.

The forward subsequently left the national team camp before Portugal’s fixture against Denmark, prompting the federation to examine whether his actions warranted disciplinary action.

What Did The Portuguese Football Federation Say?

The FPF’s Disciplinary Council confirmed that proceedings had been initiated against Ronaldo following a decision taken on October 9, with the investigation focusing on the disciplinary implications of the reported events.

The federation imposed a provisional suspension in addition to the automatic preventive suspension that had applied before the formal proceedings began. The case was referred to the federation’s Disciplinary Investigation Commission on October 10 and given urgent status.

The provisional measure does not constitute a final verdict. The federation has not yet announced the outcome of the investigation or confirmed the final penalty Ronaldo may face.

Ronaldo Apologises, Accepts Responsibility

Ronaldo has acknowledged that leaving the national team camp was a mistake and apologised to his teammates and Portuguese supporters.

In a statement explaining his decision, the forward said he should have handled the disagreement differently, even though he felt that the coach had broken his word.

He accepted responsibility for his actions and said the federation should determine the appropriate punishment. Ronaldo also made clear that he did not intend to retire from international football and remained available to represent Portugal after serving any suspension.

Jorge Jesus Had Denied A Rift

The incident attracted considerable attention because of Ronaldo’s status as Portugal’s captain and all-time leading international goalscorer.

Ronaldo publicly criticised Jesus over the handling of their discussions about his playing time. The coach, however, denied that there was a rift between them and indicated that the door remained open for the forward to return to the national team.

The dispute has placed the focus on the relationship between the veteran striker and the national team’s coaching staff as Portugal prepares for its upcoming international fixtures.

What Happens Next?

Ronaldo’s case will proceed through the FPF’s disciplinary process, with the final outcome still pending. The provisional suspension should not be confused with a definitive ruling on the incident.

The federation’s decision will determine the consequences of his departure from the training camp and whether any additional suspension or other disciplinary measure is imposed.

Despite the controversy, Ronaldo has indicated that he wants to continue playing for Portugal and is prepared to accept the consequences of his actions.
