China recorded more than 1.5 billion cross-regional passenger trips during the five-day May Day holiday, marking a 4% increase compared with the same period last year, according to figures released Tuesday by the Ministry of Transport.

The holiday travel rush averaged over 300 million passenger trips per day, reflecting strong domestic mobility during one of the country’s busiest annual travel periods.

On May 5, the final day of the holiday, total inter-regional passenger trips reached 290 million, up 8% year-on-year.

Road travel continued to dominate holiday movement, accounting for 263.7 million trips on the day, an 8% rise from a year earlier.

Railway travel also posted strong growth, with 23 million passenger journeys recorded, up 9%.

Waterway transport handled 1.035 million trips, showing a modest 1.4% increase.

Civil aviation, however, saw a slight dip, with 2.3 million passenger trips recorded — down 0.7% compared with the same day last year.
