Cardiologist warns sugar is the ‘silent killer’ causing cholesterol, spiking your insulin, inflaming arteries

When people begin their weight loss journey, sugar is usually the first thing to go — and for good reason. But experts now warn that sugar’s dangers go far beyond fat gain. In a recent Instagram post, cardiologist Dr Naveen Bhamri (MD, DM) explained how sugar could be silently damaging your heart and overall health.

“Sugar Is Poison,” Says Dr Bhamri

“From spiking insulin to inflaming arteries, the sweet stuff is doing more harm than you think,” Dr Bhamri wrote on July 23. He urged people to reconsider their sugar cravings, stating, “If you’ve been craving sugar daily, it’s time to ask: Is it worth the risk?”

According to him, sugar is the most dangerous substance we consume regularly. He listed several serious health impacts:

  • Raises cholesterol levels

  • Damages organs through sudden blood sugar spikes

  • Causes insulin resistance

  • Leads to obesity and organ injury

Dr Bhamri dismissed claims that brown sugar is healthier than white sugar. “According to me, there should be no sugar in your meals,” he emphasized.

Sugar’s Hidden Dangers

Beyond weight gain, regular sugar consumption may contribute to:

  • Constant fatigue

  • Uncontrollable cravings

  • Increased risk of heart disease

  • Brain fog

  • Systemic inflammation

A Better Test for Insulin Resistance

On July 7, cardiologist Dr Alok Chopra also raised concerns, stating that common blood sugar tests might not catch early signs of insulin resistance. Instead, he recommends a Comprehensive Insulin Response Test to get a clearer picture of how your body actually responds to sugar.

“It’s not just about weight anymore,” Dr Bhamri concluded. “It’s about survival.”
