After the silence, Virat Kohli at “120%” brings the roar back to Bengaluru

The Virat Kohli faithful erupted on social media—and in the stands—on Saturday as cricket returned to Bengaluru. The city’s adopted icon delivered a masterclass at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, scoring a commanding 69 off 38 balls to anchor a clinical chase.

Though Jacob Duffy’s incisive spell and Devdutt Padikkal’s explosive start earned the post-match awards, it was Kohli who dominated the spotlight—operating, as he later said, at “120 per cent.”

The reception was deafening. Former South African pacer Dale Steyn, stationed near the dugout, remarked that the noise nearly “exploded” his ears when Kohli walked out for the toss. There was no rust in his return after a two-month break—only rhythm, intent, and control.

Now in a more selective phase of his career, Kohli has stepped away from the grind of Tests and T20Is, focusing primarily on ODIs. The reduced workload appears to have rejuvenated him. His recent international outings—three centuries in nine matches—underscore that enduring class.

On Saturday, he paced the chase with maturity. Early on, he allowed Padikkal to take charge before accelerating with signature strokes—none more memorable than a sublime lofted drive off Ehsan Malinga that sailed over long-off, a contender for the shot of the tournament.

He also showcased restraint, deferring to Rajat Patidar during a blistering cameo, before finishing the job himself. In the 16th over, Kohli dismantled Harshal Patel with a flurry of boundaries to seal the win.

There were flashes of his trademark intensity too—most notably a fiery send-off for Travis Head, who had tormented the side in a previous meeting.

The night ended on a softer note, with Kohli blowing a kiss to Anushka Sharma in the stands—an image that summed up the evening: emotional, electric, and unmistakably his.

It wasn’t just a return to cricket in Bengaluru—it was a reminder that when Kohli is in full flow, few spectacles in sport come close.
