Cyclone Murasu Makes Landfall in Andhra Pradesh, Brings Winds of Up to 150 Kmph and Heavy Rainfall

Cyclone Murasu made landfall near Kothapatnam, close to Ongole in Andhra Pradesh, around 1 am on Tuesday, bringing extremely heavy rainfall and powerful winds reaching speeds of up to 150 kmph.

The cyclone uprooted hundreds of trees across Nellore, Prakasam and Bapatla districts, while several low-lying areas were inundated. Despite the intensity of the storm, electricity supply remained uninterrupted across the affected regions, with power infrastructure reportedly holding up against the strong winds.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the situation through a teleconference with district collectors and senior officials at around 3.30 am, assessing the impact of Cyclone Murasu and the ongoing emergency response.

During the meeting, officials informed the Chief Minister that the cyclone was expected to complete its landfall and cross the coast by approximately 6.30 am.

Chief Minister Directs Officials to Ensure Public Safety

Naidu instructed authorities to prevent people from venturing onto roads in cyclone-affected areas until fallen trees and other obstructions had been completely cleared.

The Chief Minister particularly emphasised electrical safety, recalling fatalities during a previous cyclone when at least five people reportedly died after coming into contact with fallen live wires.

He directed officials to take precautionary measures to prevent similar incidents and ensure that residents remained indoors until conditions were safe.

No Power Disruption Reported

Electricity department officials informed the government that no power poles had fallen so far and that electricity supply remained uninterrupted across the affected districts.

Although strong winds uprooted hundreds of trees and caused flooding in low-lying areas, the electricity infrastructure appeared to have withstood the cyclone’s impact.

Authorities continued monitoring the situation, focusing on clearing roads, assessing damage and ensuring public safety as Cyclone Murasu moved across the Andhra Pradesh coast.
