Flying With A Baby Just Got 50% Costlier As IndiGo Raises Multiple Passenger Fees

Flying with an infant on IndiGo is now more expensive after India’s largest airline revised charges for several ancillary services, including infant travel, excess baggage, priority check-in and boarding, unaccompanied minor assistance and travel certificates.

The biggest increase affects passengers travelling with babies. IndiGo has raised its domestic infant travel fee by 50%, from ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 per infant per sector. The revised charge applies to infants who are more than three days old and under two years of age on the date of travel.

IndiGo Infant Fee Rises To ₹3,000

Under IndiGo’s rules, infants do not occupy a separate seat and must travel on an accompanying adult’s lap. However, a ticket and the applicable infant fee are still required.

The airline allows only one infant per accompanying adult. Passengers are also required to carry valid proof of the child’s age, such as a birth certificate, passport, vaccination certificate or the mother’s hospital discharge documents.

If valid age proof is not produced at check-in, the applicable full fare may have to be paid for the infant, subject to seat availability.

For a return domestic journey, the ₹3,000 infant fee would mean an additional ₹6,000 in infant charges, before considering other applicable travel costs.

Excess Baggage Also Gets More Expensive

IndiGo has also increased its excess baggage charge on domestic flights from ₹700 to ₹800 per kg.

That means a passenger carrying 5 kg over the applicable baggage allowance would now pay ₹4,000 instead of ₹3,500, an increase of ₹500.

The change could particularly affect families travelling with infants, who may already need to carry additional items and luggage.

Priority Check-In And Boarding Fee Hiked

The airline has also increased the fee for its Fast Forward priority check-in and boarding service.

The charge has risen from ₹450 to ₹650, representing an increase of around 44%. IndiGo’s current fee page lists the Fast Forward airport charge at ₹650.

Passengers opting for the service will therefore have to pay ₹200 more than before.

Unaccompanied Minor Fee Revised

IndiGo has also revised the charge for its unaccompanied minor service, known as the Flying Solo service.

The fee has increased from ₹5,000 to ₹5,999, according to reports on the latest revision. Children below five years of age cannot use the Flying Solo service and must travel with an accompanying person aged over 18.

Travel Certificate Fee Also Increased

The airline has raised its travel certificate fee from ₹200 to ₹300. IndiGo’s current fee information lists the travel certificate charge at ₹300.

Passengers requesting a travel certificate through IndiGo’s call centre may also face an additional ₹100 per person per sector, according to the airline’s fee information.

The revisions mean passengers may now need to factor in higher ancillary costs when calculating the total price of an IndiGo journey. While the base airfare remains separate, services such as infant travel, additional baggage and priority airport services can add significantly to the final bill.

For families travelling with young children, the most notable change is the 50% increase in the infant fee, taking the charge to ₹3,000 per sector.
