After anti-NEET bill, Vijay to move resolution to retain 543 Lok Sabha seats, back women’s quota

A day after the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed resolutions seeking the abolition of NEET, Chief Minister Vijay is expected to move a resolution on delimitation and women’s reservation in Parliament.

According to reports, the TVK leader’s resolution will urge the Centre to maintain the Lok Sabha-Rajya Sabha seat ratio at 2.2:1 while keeping the Lok Sabha’s strength fixed at 543 seats.

The resolution is also expected to call for the immediate implementation of the 33% reservation for women in the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats.

It will argue that any delimitation exercise based on a post-1971 Census could disproportionately reduce the parliamentary representation of southern states, including Tamil Nadu, which have successfully implemented population-control measures.

The proposed resolution reportedly says that since constituency delimitation has not been carried out for nearly five decades, seats in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies should instead be increased based on the 2011 Census through a constitutional amendment.

The Tamil Nadu government is expected to argue that states such as Tamil Nadu should not be penalised politically for controlling population growth.

Tamil Nadu’s push against NEET

On Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed two resolutions opposing the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

The TVK government sought the abolition of NEET, arguing that the examination undermines social justice and the rights of states.

“This examination has completely lost the trust of students across the nation. Therefore, this examination system must be abolished,” Vijay told the Assembly.

The House also passed a resolution opposing the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill.

Both resolutions were passed amid a walkout by BJP members.
