2 dead, several feared trapped after heavy rain triggers landslide in Mumbai’s Kurla

Two people were killed and at least four to six others were feared trapped under debris after a landslide in Mumbai’s Kurla area early Wednesday following heavy rain, officials said.

The landslide occurred around 3 am in the Ashoknagar area under the Ghatkopar police station jurisdiction. Police, BMC, NDRF and other emergency teams were deployed at the site for rescue operations.

DCP Ganesh Shinde said two bodies had been recovered and around four to five people were believed to be trapped.

“Due to the rain, a landslide has occurred in the Ashoknagar area,” Shinde told ANI, adding that rescue operations were underway with personnel from multiple agencies.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde also visited the site to oversee the rescue operation.

Two dead, two injured

The deceased were identified as Sahil Ansari, 28, and Mohamad Samir, 14. Both were declared brought dead at Rajawadi Hospital.

Two others, Sohel Ansari, 18, and Mohamad Ansari, 14, were injured and taken to hospital. They were reported to be in stable condition.

The incident came as Mumbai experienced another spell of heavy monsoon rain, which has disrupted road and air traffic and caused waterlogging in several parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department has issued rain alerts during periods of intense rainfall.

Two killed in Mumbai building fire

The landslide occurred hours after a separate fire in a 12-storey residential building in Mumbai’s Vile Parle area left two people dead and six others injured.

The fire broke out around 10 pm on Tuesday in two flats on the 11th floor of Shanta Bhavan. Officials said the blaze damaged electrical wiring, an AC unit and household items across an area of about 4,000 square feet.

Eight people, including two firefighters, were injured and taken to hospitals. A two-and-a-half-year-old child, Abir, and a 23-year-old woman, Ankita, were declared brought dead at Nanavati Hospital.
